How is the tip calculated?

The tip is the bill amount multiplied by the tip percentage. The total is the bill plus the tip, and splitting divides both the tip and the total evenly across the number of people:

tip=bill×tip %100

Example: $85.40 bill, 18% tip, split 3 ways

85.40 × 0.18 gives a tip of $15.37, for a total of $100.77. Split three ways, that's $5.12 tip per person and $33.59 per person overall.
