How is an hourly wage converted to a salary?

Multiply the hourly wage by the number of hours worked per week to get a weekly wage, then multiply by the number of weeks worked per year:

annual salary=hourly wage×hours/week×weeks/year

A standard full-time schedule is 40 hours a week for all 52 weeks of the year — 2,080 hours a year — but the calculator above lets you change either number for a part-time schedule or unpaid time off. Monthly pay divides the annual salary by 12; biweekly pay (every two weeks, 26 times a year) is simply double the weekly wage.

Example: $20/hour, full-time (40 hrs/week, 52 weeks/year)

20 × 40 × 52 = $41,600 a year, or $3,466.67 a month and $800.00 a week.

Example: $18/hour, part-time (25 hrs/week, 50 weeks/year)

18 × 25 × 50 = $22,500 a year — fewer hours and two unpaid weeks off both reduce the total compared to the full-time example above.

Example: a $60,000 annual salary, full-time

60,000 ÷ 52 ÷ 40 = $28.85 an hour, or $5,000.00 a month.

Frequently asked questions

How many work hours are in a year?
A standard full-time schedule is 2,080 hours a year (40 hours/week × 52 weeks/year). That figure is what most published "hourly to salary" conversions assume unless stated otherwise, and it's the default this calculator uses.
Is this gross pay or take-home pay?
Gross pay — the amount before income tax, payroll tax (Social Security and Medicare), and any other withholding or deductions are taken out. Actual take-home pay is lower and depends on your tax situation, filing status, and benefit elections, which this calculator doesn't have access to.
What's the difference between biweekly and semi-monthly pay?
Biweekly means every two weeks — 26 paychecks a year — which is exactly double the weekly wage, as shown above. Semi-monthly means twice a month — 24 paychecks a year (annual ÷ 24) — which lands on different dates each cycle and produces a slightly larger per-paycheck amount than biweekly for the same annual salary. Check your pay stub or offer letter to see which schedule applies to you.
How do I account for unpaid time off or a part-time schedule?
Lower the "weeks worked per year" field below 52 for unpaid weeks off, or lower "hours per week" for a part-time schedule — both fields feed directly into the calculation, so the annual figure will reflect fewer paid hours.
Does this include overtime pay?
No — this calculator applies the hourly rate you enter to every hour uniformly. It doesn't add a higher rate for hours worked beyond 40 in a week, which many hourly employees are legally entitled to.
